Culture Shock® DC began hosting a dance competition in 2004 as a means to bring together the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) dance communities in friendly competition. In 2005, Culture Shock® DC named the competition, the East Coast Dance Competition. What started as the only, and first, local competitive event for collegiate dance teams, soon drew participants from all over the United States and Europe. Winners of early East Coast Dance Competitions earned a chance to compete in Switzerland and $2000 in prize money toward travel expenses.
Each year the East Coast Dance Competition (and non-competitive concert in later years) draws in audiences of over 1200 people and features a cast of over 300 dancers. Renowned as the premier dance completion on the East Coast, past participants and winners include Rhythm City (Bronx, NY), Capital Funk (Washington, D.C.), Studio One (Florida), and Fr3sh (New Jersey).
Culture Shock® DC, in alignment with its mission statement, uses the East Coast Dance Competition as a vehicle for local youth engagement through exposure to the performing arts and education in the community unifying nature inherent to Hip hop culture.
The East Coast Dance Competition has received coverage from the Washington Post, the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and local news media outlets.
This year, as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary of ECDC, Culture Shock® DC is proud to host some of the best local, national, and international hip hop dance teams to compete in front of a panel of renowned judges for the grand prize of $2,500!
